CARMELITES

Inspired by the Old Testament prophet, Elijah, and Mary, the Mother of Jesus, Carmelites seek to live in God's presence and call people to a deeper faith. Working today in education, parishes, communications, evangelization, and social justice initiatives, this Order of priests and brothers follow an 800-year-old tradition of spirituality. The only religious Order founded in the Holy Land which continues to exist today, the Carmelites spread throughout Europe in the Middle Ages. Buffeted by the religious and political struggles of Europe, the Carmelites made foundations in Africa, Asia, and South America. They came to North America in 1864, first settling in the U.S. and then quickly moved to establish a foundation in Canada, settling in Niagara Falls in 1875.
